What Doesn’t Belong in Residential Recycling Cart

Here is a reminder concerning the items that do not go into the Novak recycling cart:

  • Electronics - These need to be recycled separately from your regular single stream items.  Contact Bargain Bytes at 605-275-0400 for information regarding electronic recycling. You may also take most electronics to the Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
  • Toys – Even though toys are made of plastic and metal they are not recyclable.
  • Scrap Metal – Although scrap metal is recyclable it is not accepted in your single stream recycling. Scrap metal can be taken to TJN – located at 5501 W 9th St, Sioux Falls, SD.
  • Styrofoam – There is no outlet for Styrofoam recycling in this part of the country.
  • Wood – Wood is not allowed in single stream. However, wood can be taken separately to the Sioux Falls Regional Sanitary Landfill for recycling, or to a local wood recycling facility.
  • Hazardous Waste – Residents can take these types of items to the Sioux Falls Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Visit http://www.siouxfalls.org/disposal for more information.
  • Fast Food and To-Go Containers – Stable markets do not exist for these types of products. They are considered trash.
  • Napkins, toilet paper, & paper towels – These have most likely already been recycled and are not capable of being recycled past this stage of paper. These types of paper products are trash.
  • Ceramics, window glass, mirrors, and non-container glass – Ceramic plates and decorative items are not a type of glass that can be recycled and must be thrown in the trash receptacle.
  • Cardboard that has been contaminated by food or grease –Food and grease can contaminate the cardboard making it an unrecyclable product. For instance the bottom of a take out pizza box is contaminated and should be thrown in the trash.
  • Diapers and bio-hazardous waste including needles, syringes, pharmaceutical waste and other home healthcare products – Some of these items need to be disposed of in a special way for safety purposes and most definitely do not belong in your recycling cart.
  • Yard hoses, clothing, & food – These items are not recyclable.
