Keep Animals out of Your Trash

It is well-known that wildlife and domestic animals are attracted to the smell of food scraps. By following these advices on how to keep animals out of your trash, you will create a nicer and safer environment for both your family and our Sioux Falls waste company.

Dogs

Instead of putting food scraps straight into the garbage can in your kitchen, put the scraps into a plastic bag, seal it, and place it out of the dog’s reach if you don’t have time to put it in the outside garbage bin or compost it. It is also a good idea to supervise your dog when it is in the kitchen, and correct him as soon as he attempts to sniff around the garbage.

A firm “no” or “stop” along with clapping your hands usually does the trick. Secure the lid with plastic snaps or something similar to make it more difficult for it to dig out the food. As a last resort, there are many good garbage-training devices available of you are not able to supervise your dog at all times. The devices let out a jet of compressed air that startles the dog if it gets too close to the trash.

Wildlife

Animals are blessed with a keen sense of smell, which makes it very important that you try to lessen their temptation to dig through your trash. Not only can the animals make a crazy mess, but the little critters can also carry diseases that can spread to your family and pets. If you put the carts out days before pickup, you are basically inviting wildlife to a meal.

A good idea is to keep the garbage in a garage or secured shed until pickup day. Our regular garbage collection service begins at 6 a.m. Monday through Friday. Residents of Sioux Falls and the surrounding area should have all materials out for collection by 6 a.m. on the scheduled pickup day. If garbage is not out in time for regular collection, it can either be picked up the following week, or you may request a special pickup (for an additional fee).

Keep smelly food scraps such as fish and meat in a cool place and in sealed bags to avoid contaminating your bins with the smell. If the bins smell bad, you can pour biodegradable soap and vinegar in them and hose them off regularly.

Heavy rocks or bungee straps can be used to secure the lids of your garbage bins, but keep in mind that the straps will have to be released before pickup so the lids can move freely. Also, don’t overload the bins so the lid won’t close properly. A good tip for avoiding bugs to get into your garbage is to smear petroleum jelly around the opening of the bin.

Our residential garbage service includes trash collection, yard waste removal, and free document shredding for the people of Sioux Falls and surrounding areas. We also offer customers recycling service through our partnership with RecycleBank. For more information about our services, please call 605-338-7126.
